Either way, it's an extremely useful feature of the 60D, and a nice addition to Canon's line. I personally think Sony does a better job implementing articulating LCDs on its cameras-though none of them can flip so that the subjects can see the LCD, they flip up and down much faster than the 60D, which requires you pull the LCD out to the side of the camera first and then angle it down. The arm can also turn all the way around, so that the screen faces your subject or even the camera body (protecting the LCD from scratches). The most practical use is for holding the 60D above your head (angling the LCD down) or below your waist (angling the LCD up). The last amenity is a feature completely new to Canon D-SLRs-the camera's main LCD is on an articulating arm, and can be flipped out and rotated to a variety of angles. The second addition is a second, small display located on top of the body, which shows shooting information like ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. The first is a scroll wheel next to the LCD, which lets you rapidly cruise through menus and images-though the wheel is a little smaller and not as comfortable as the pricier Canon EOS 7D's scroll wheel. It also adds three key features that make it worth the price upgrade. Its closest sibling in price is the Editors' Choice Canon EOS Rebel T2i ($899.99, 4.5 stars), and while the 60D has the same 18-megapixel APS-C image sensor, it adds a little more speed, shooting 5.3 frames per second rather than the T2i's 3.7, and a little more heft-it weighs 1.7 pounds (body only), and measures 4.2 by 5.7 by 3.1 inches (HWD). The 60D is the least expensive Canon D-SLR that isn't part of the Rebel line of entry-level, sub-$1,000 D-SLRs. If that's what you need, there are a growing number of D-SLRs (like the Nikon D3100 and the upcoming Nikon D700) and other cameras like the Sony Alpha NEX-3 ($549.99, 4.5 stars), or the Sony Alpha55 ($849.99, 4 stars) that can provide continuous autofocus, and thus a better camcorder experience.
Like most traditional D-SLRs and unlike most professional-level camcorders, the 60D lacks continuous autofocus while recording video, meaning the camera won't be able to automatically keep faces and moving objects in focus. Video quality is also top-notch: the 60D offers a vast array of video recording capabilities that deliver professional-level results, or just make your personal recordings look like cinematic masterpieces. Though Canon's late to this game, the 60D is an excellent camera that can produce beautiful images, even in the most challenging lighting conditions.
